The Building Performance Simulation Lab is involved in a variety of projects ranging from traditional building system emulation to most nascent fields like human behaviour and big data analysis on city scale. Here you may learn about the strengths of our group and the techniques equiped to dig into the cutting-edge issues. With a variety of factors for building energy consumption, the prediction accuracy largely depends on the data integrity of building basic information and measured energy consumption. in view of th...With a variety of factors for building energy consumption, the prediction accuracy largely depends on the data integrity of building basic information and measured energy consumption. in view of the fact that practical building energy performance related data are general lacking, how to sufficiently use limited available data to achieve reasonable and accurate building energy prediction? to answer this urgent question, it is crucial to fundamentally explore the indispensable variables for building energy prediction models. this study creatively combined the space filling design and feature dimension reduction method with current building energy prediction models. by means of feature analysis of high-dimensional data space formed by a designed building performance database, we deeply explore the complex mapping relation between building factors and building energy consumption and the further feature selection for building energy prediction. using office building as the research object, this study will achieve a construction method of both building performance database and minimum variables set for building energy prediction models. the findings will hopefully solve the problem of using limited data condition to quickly achieve reasonable and accurate building energy prediction. they can be utilized as the theoretical support and data basis for building energy prediction, optimization design and benchmark evaluation of office buildings. +

Urban/community morphology has become one of the hot research topics. however, the dynamic coupling mechanism between microclimate and building energy use inside communities is far from clear, and ...Urban/community morphology has become one of the hot research topics. however, the dynamic coupling mechanism between microclimate and building energy use inside communities is far from clear, and the relevant research about the impact of morphology factors is not complete yet. there is an urgent need for an overall evaluation system of the urban/community morphology. based on the theory of urban planning, fluid dynamics and heat transfer, we will first select the important indices in the community scale, investigate their impact on the microclimate and building energy use, and reveal the inter-relationships among themselves. through cfd simulation, building energy simulation, wind tunnel experiment, statistical sampling and data-driven modeling, the dynamic coupling mechanism between microclimate and building energy use will be clarified and then the community overall evaluation (coe) model will be developed. this study will make a breakthrough on the bi-directional coupling simulation of microclimate and building energy, and identify the corresponding relationships between coe and multiple evaluation indices such as microclimate, energy use intensity (eui), and the utilization ratio of renewable energy. the coe can provide quantitative support for the comparison and optimization of community planning, which could be the theoretical basis of eco-low-carbon community development and strongly support the theory development of the demand-side integrative energy planning. +

Inlets and outlets of skyscrapers façade are usually affected by fluctuate wind pressure. when it gets positive the outlets may not exhaust air normally, and on the other hand, dedicated air system...Inlets and outlets of skyscrapers façade are usually affected by fluctuate wind pressure. when it gets positive the outlets may not exhaust air normally, and on the other hand, dedicated air system may not inhale properly. to ensure the robustness of oa & ea system, fan parameters have to be tested through even the worst situations. meanwhile, how system will perform to keep a good indoor pressure during temperate wind environment will be another issue. in this project, we choose cfd model to analyze the pressure contour of all vertical façade and vent cabinet on each mechanical floor, and text the result against the wind tunnel experiment. as to temperate outdoor wind environment, we propose the control mode: variable frequency fan with overload protection, assisted with interlock controlled oa & ea fans. according to simulation results, for now, our methods may perform well in case of churning wind pressure situations. +

Climate change would affect the building energy demand in the future. building simulation is a feasible way to quantitatively evaluate this impact. based on the long/short-term climate periodicity ...Climate change would affect the building energy demand in the future. building simulation is a feasible way to quantitatively evaluate this impact. based on the long/short-term climate periodicity analysis, a dual-periodic time series model is established to predict the future monthly temperatures in shanghai. from the fitting results and the preliminary assessment analysis, it is observed that the alternative forecasting method and the corresponding dual-periodic tsm has better capability of characterizing and predicting performance for both recent and future temperature trends in shanghai than gcm under rcp4.5. with consideration of three composite uncertainty scenarios, we convert the predicted monthly temperatures into hourly tmys by using morphing method. using the future tmys as the weather input of prototypical building models of shanghai, we can see that the simulated building energy demand presents fluctuant trends in the future periods. +

The experimental research on performance assessment of hvac control strategies consumes a great deal of cost and labor; besides, the study objects are normally fixed. meanwhile, no single building ...The experimental research on performance assessment of hvac control strategies consumes a great deal of cost and labor; besides, the study objects are normally fixed. meanwhile, no single building performance simulation tool offers sufficient capabilities and flexibilities to accommodate the ever increasing complexity and rapid innovations in control systems and technologies. therefore, it is necessary to establish a new emulation environment for performance assessment of hvac control strategies. the aim of the presented work is to develop a hardware-in-the-loop emulation test bed for performance assessment of hvac control strategies and to analyze the main factors that have impacts on the emulation results, thus to provide some ideas and solutions for the development of better performance emulation test bed in the future. in order to achieve this goal, the available methodologies and tools for assessment of hvac control strategies are first investigated and the key points of hardware-in-the loop emulation test bed are studied in detail. further, a prototypical office building model is developed and its hvac system is designed according to the cooling and heating load of the building. corresponding control strategies are also selected and specified for the hvac system. then the design scheme of a hardware-in-the-loop emulation test bed is described in the report, which is to develop a middleware based on opc protocol for real-time communication between software and hardware. a series of technical problems occurs during the development of the test bed are discussed as well. finally, two levels of control strategies for the prototypical hvac system are emulated and evaluated both with the building energy simulation software trnsys and with the hardware-in-the-loop emulation test bed, and the impacting factors of the emulation results are also analyzed. the study work shows that the hardware-in-the-loop emulation test bed which combines the strengths of software and hardware can be used to emulate hvac control systems and evaluate corresponding control strategies, so as to provide feasible methodology and new emulation test bed for performance assessment of control system and strategy. +
